North Pembrokeshire Coast Path: Day 4

Updated: Jul 21, 2024

Distance: 12.2 km ( 7.6 miles)

Newgale Sands - Cwin Bach - Porthmynawyd - Ogof y Cae - Foxgloves - Aber Dwyrain - Dinas Fawr - Gwadn

Leaving Newgate Sands the initial uphill climb denotes the character of this section of the onwards coast path to Solva. Reminiscent of the rougher stonier and more strenuous section before Newgale, the path twists and turns, descending and ascending frequently. The landfall is softer on the eye, much greener, bracken and wild flowers in abundance. Eventually levelling out until the last drop at Dinas Fawr, the inlet at Gwadn appears, and from which the sheltered descending path is taken to reach the quayside at the very pretty village of Solva.

Spending time in Solva for lunch and a respite is well worth it. The lower village features painted houses and well preserved lime kilns with a nod to its historical past, restaurants, pubs and is popular with kayakers and boat owners, as the beautiful harbour provides ample mooring.

Resuming the path on the western edge of the inlet, a climb up onto the cliff edge slipping past delightful hillside cottage lets, brings once again magnificent views across to Caerbwdi Bay. This stretch of the path becomes much more relaxed, often level and very gentle only gradually undulating. Passing many coves, identifiable corroded tug boat boilers caught in the rocks where several boats have been scuttled along the Craddle, crossing brooks and enjoying much wider, smoother compressed gravel paths underfoot, the draw of Caerfai Bay and Ramsey Island on the distant horizon, brings this section of the path to a close at Trelew.

Lower Solva (Solfach Isaf) - Harbour - Penrhyn - Careg Lyln - The Cradle - Loch Warren - Aber Llong - Porth Rhaw - Trelerw - Caer Bwdy Bay
