The London Loop: reaching the outer limit - Stage 14

Moor Park to Hatch End: 3.75 miles (6 km)

Trail Landmarks

  • Westbury Road - taking the squeeze stile just after the underpass of the Metropolitan line, the clearly defined trail heads through scrub land, power line's overhead to emerge onto the broad fairways of Sandy Lodge Golf course. Crossing the links, careful to avoid the flying golf balls, the path leads out to the A4125 and a petrol station which very conveniently is home to both an Asda and Greggs for picnic provisions.

  • South Oxhey Playing Fields - unusually named as this area is a combination of not unpleasant woodland, managed lawns and wildflower meadows but with only a small 'playground'. Traversing across is straightforward, and if a pit stop is required, several benches to choose between.

  • Oxhey Woods Local Nature Reserve - forming the greater part of this stage, this delightful woodland path arcs through the three sections of this 240 acre expanse of woodland. Thought to be ancient in origin, the wood is nevertheless quite dense in places but the path stays very clear and well waymarked, particularly as there are many offshoots that could be tempting to explore. On this visit, much dappled sunlight illuminated the path heightening the magical atmosphere.

  • Hatch End - leaving the wood at the south eastern corner, the path skirts several horse fields and broad grassy meadows with panoramic views of North London and Wembley Stadium ahead and then passing through Pinnerwood Farm (could be muddy) and onto Grimsdyke road where passage into Hatch End itself and London Overground for travelling onwards awaits.
