Undertaking The Capital Ring: Section 12

Updated: Apr 2, 2022

Highgate to Stoke Newington 5.4 miles (8.5km)

After the hilly elevations from the Highgate Woods, this section whilst over 5 miles is very level and straightforward to navigate. Rejoining on the Archway Road, a small stroll finds the entrance to the Parkland Walk. Formerly the Highgate and London Railway line, it descends gradually as a broad and level gravel track.with much evidence of former platforms and footbridges. Passing Crouch End and the ’Spriggan‘ jumping from above and tasteful graphite art within the brick niches, the route continues to cross Mount Pleasant with a lovely elevation to view Central and East London. Leaving this great peaceful walk, Finsbury Park lies ahead, one of the largest open spaces in North London. Traversing through McKenzie Gardens, having passed boating lake and playgrounds, the path heads on alongside The New River, a man-made 17thC watercourse. Emerging onto the East and then West Stoke Newington’s reservoirs where much new residential building and relaying of the riverside path has been undertaken, disguised pumping stations appear on the horizon. Upon entering popular Clissold Park, the magnificent spire of St. Mary‘s church is unmissable. Following the perimeter of the park and then continuing into Stoke Newington’s high street, now the closest point (4miles) on the ring to Charring Cross, the final section of this path passes through peaceful Abney park with its chaotic serried ranks of luminary gravestones.
