Beckton District Park to Woolwich: 3.5 miles (5.6 km)
Starting in Beckton Park, the park-side walk continues through New Beckton Park and The Cyprus estate to arrive at the Royal Albert Dock and the Docklands Campus of the UEL. The Docks, over a mile long stretch towards the Steve Redgrave Bridge which on this occasion provided an alternative access to Gallions point whilst the lock gates were under reconstruction. A small detour around the Marina, and then over the bridge offered fine views both East of the former Royal Arsenal and Thamesmead and to the west, The Dock and London City Airport and the City beyond. The path now stays Thameside on a promenade, passing over slipways, the Royal Victoria Gardens and via a jetty of a much earlier ferry landing point. The promenade offers yet again wonderful views up and downstream from North Woolwich, and across to the south embankment. Arriving at the Foot tunnel entrance, a solitary orange brick circular building about which the car ferry traffic huddles, awaits 126 steps which descend into the tunnel and the lowest point 60ft below sea level, of the Capital Ring. A 15 min walk which takes the walker from Newham and now into The London Borough of Greenwich, and with a 101 step ascent, completes this section, and for some the final section of the Ring.
