Undertaking The Capital Ring: Section 4

Crystal Palace to Streatham: 4.1 miles (6.6 km)

Leaving Crystal Palace Station, this section kicks off in the London Borough of Bromley and with it, hilly ascents and descents. Fine residences adorn the streets as the ascent is made to eventually reach the South Norwood transmitter. Crossing the A212 and on into Westow Park, brings the path into the district of Norwood and the Great North Wood again. Once again affluent Victorian properties occupy this conservation area which presents a fine open space for recreation. Reaching the top of Hermitage Road and walking along Beulah Hill, views of Central London and the Shard rise up to the North on the horizon. Turning left to descend steep Biggin Hill, Croydon‘s office blocks and Central dstrict now loom into view creating a broad panorama. Shortly onwards the path turns into charming Biggin Wood and then a short urban roadside link leads into Norwood Grove. Known locally as the White House, Norwood Grove mansion sits within a gated garden, originally the home of Arthur Anderson, joint founder of P&O. On our visit a delightful artisan fair and market was in full flow selling many delicious victuals. Continuing along the Colgate Path and now into the Borough of Lambeth, Streatham Common approaches. Initially the drive is flanked by veteran Oak trees and then the stunning broad open Common spans into view with the church tower of Streatham’s parish church in the distance. Eventually crossing Streatham High Road passing the memorial garden and Rabbit Hole pub, and then taking Lewin Road to the railway line brings this section to a close.
